Look out for…The Keeper!

The Scottish Countryside Alliance Educational Trust has been working closely with the Moorland Association and the Scottish Gamekeepers Association to bring a valuable new resource to all of Scotland’s schoolchildren and students. A brand new, Scottish version of the hugely popular ‘The Keeper’ DVD has been produced and is available now.

The 20 minute film tells the story of Adam, a schoolboy who after becoming split up from his group whilst on a trip to a moor, bumps into Fred, the keeper. Fred takes Adam on a journey which opens his eyes to the multitude of species that live on the moor and the important job of looking after our natural heritage that gamekeepers like Fred undertake every day.

Originally made for a National Park visitor centre, the film is aimed at anyone with an interest in Scotland’s moorlands, from schoolchildren and their teachers upwards.   The DVD comes with a booklet giving background information on moorlands, which is a useful teaching aid.

If you would like to order a copy, please contact 0131 335 0200 or email info@scaet.org.uk with your address and it will be posted to you.

Snaring in Scotland - A Practitioners's Guide

The use of snares is a vital tool in the control of foxes, particularly on moorlands where the vast scale of the landscape makes other methods less effective. However, snaring is a controversial technique which can cause problems if not used properly.

Fourteen organisations involved representing all sectors of countryside management and Government agencies have come together to draw up a "Practicioner's Guide" to the use of snares.

This guide sets out best practice for all snare users to follow and it will be followed up by new regulations in 2009 to ensure that the highest standards will be maintained.
