A Vibrant Future?

Life in the uplands has never been easy and even with modern technology it will always be limited by the ability to generate income or changes to Government subsidy. There have been big changes in recent years with uncertainty over the traditional primary industries producing sheep and timber.

However, public interest in moorlands and their wildlife has never been so great, and that is likely to continue.  There are new techniques to manage and regenerate moors, and strong demand from the UK and abroad to invest in that management.

The future seems lie in moorland providing services for people, whether it is for sporting, recreational access or wildlife tourism, rather than raw material production  Public subsidies are now more likely to be for environmental benefits, including clean water and carbon sequestration, rather than for production.
